Curling is Cool Now

By Brianna Alleva

Current Olympic Games

The 2026 Winter Olympic Games are currently airing on NBC and streaming on Peacock until February 22nd.

The games feature athletes competing in classic winter sports, including skiing, snowboarding, and ice skating. Some of the unique games include luge, ski mountaineering, and biathlon.

The United States currently sits in third place with 4 gold, 7 silver, and 3 bronze medals. Norway is currently in first place and Italy second.

What is Curling?

One sport that many Americans have become consumed with is curling. Curling originated in Scotland in the 16th century and was played with rocks on frozen lakes.

The object of the game is to get your granite stone, weighing between 38 and 44 pounds, closest to the center of the target at the end of a lane. The players start with a curling stick to push the stone down the lane. Each ring of the target equals a different number of points, with the bullseye at 3 points.

The sport includes a broom for players to sweep away or melt some of the ice as their stone moves, to direct it or control its speed.

Teams can sweep opponents’ stones from the target. At the end of the round, you count up the points you have with all stones on the board. A match normally includes 10 rounds.

The Phenomenon

Social Media has fallen in love with curling, currently being played at the Winter Olympics.

The level of skill the teams of two possess is so high that they make the game of skill look easy. Olympic watchers have found this previously obscure sport and gotten into the good-natured competition.

As viewers look into the sport, they start to recognize how difficult it truly is to position and send the stone in the one spot they need.

States like Minnesota have long been curling hotbeds, with 6 of the 11 US Team members from the state and the US Team training there.

Is the US any good?

Millions of watchers tuned in to watch the mixed double team of Cory Thiesse and Korey Dropkin dominate and seemingly sweep stones away with ease.

The team of Cory and Korey recently won Silver, losing a tight game against Sweden’s Isabella Wranå and Rasmus Wranå.

The women’s and men’s tournaments are both in their preliminary rounds until the final events on February 21st.  Notable US team members competing are the skip or captain Tabatha Peterson, competing in her third games, and Danny Caspar, the men’s team skip, making his Olympic debut.

The Winter Games have thrown these athletes into the spotlight and given them the well-earned chance to shine.
